    Content: Welcome to the Town of Millinocket, Maine.  The Town was incorporated by the Maine Legislature on March 16, 1901.  The Town magically grew over an amazingly short period of about two years.  Construction of the Town started in the pristine, unsettled North Maine Woods in late 1898 with what was then the largest paper mill in the world; Great Northern Paper.  The Town was nicknamed, "The Magic City" because it appeared in the wilderness "overnight".The mill was built by hundreds of immigrants, mostly of Italian and French Canadian descent.  There has always been a very close relationship between the mill and the Town, especially since the Town's sole reason for being was the Paper Mill.  One of the favorite stories is that during the Great Depression of the 1930's, no one at the mill lost their jobs.  Although the workers reduced their hours to keep everyone working, all were able to support their families during that bleak period in American history.The Town of Millinocket is also the major point of entry into the North Maine Woods which is mostly a working forest, as well as home to Baxter State Park and Mt. Katahdin.  Katahdin, which is Maine's highest mountain and the northern terminus of the Appalacian Trail.  Thousands visit the area every year to take advantage of Baxter State Park, the West Branch of the Penobscot River and the many lakes in the region. Outdoor activities abound in the Millinocket area.  Many enjoy fishing, hunting, white water rafting, kayaking, boating, camping, snowmobiling, ATV trail riding, hiking, biking, cross country skiing in the Katahdin Area.  Many visitors also find birdwatching and photography opportunities just outside their front door.Mailing Address:  Millinocket Town Office, 197 Penobscot Avenue, Millinocket, ME  04462.Office Hours:  7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Offices are closed on Wednesdays.
